Antwan Wilson will take over as chancellor of D.C. Public Schools starting February 1 if the D.C. Council approves Mayor Muriel Bowser’s selection, announced today. Wilson is currently the Oakland Unified School System superintendent. John Davis will continue to serve as interim chancellor of DCPS.

The Washington Post reports that Wilson grew up with a single mother, moving 15 times and attending 10 schools within his K-12 career. “Schools can save lives” said Wilson, 44, in an address to Oakland Unified School District earlier this year. He underwent leadership training at Broad Academy which sprung him into his career as a teacher in North Carolina and Kansas. During his two-and-a-half-year position as a superintendent in Oakland, graduation rates have risen and suspension rates have fallen, the Post reports.

Former DCPS chancellor Kaya Henderson stepped down in September after the Associated Press published an investigation in May about her solicitation of a six-figure contribution for a celebration of teachers from DCPS’s food provider, Chartwell’s, according to NBC Washington. Henderson was censured by the city’s ethics board.
